Green Card Renewal and Replacement: A Guide for Iranian Citizens

For Iranian citizens residing in the United States as permanent residents, maintaining a valid and up-to-date green card is essential for securing the rights and privileges associated with legal status. Green card renewal and replacement are crucial aspects of this process. In this comprehensive guide, we will discuss the scenarios that may warrant green card renewal or replacement and provide step-by-step instructions for Iranian citizens to successfully navigate the process while following all the necessary U.S. immigration laws and regulations.
Why is Green Card Renewal Important for Iranian Citizens?
A green card, also known as a Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), is a vital identification document that proves an individual's lawful permanent resident status in the United States. This document is essential for various purposes for Iranian citizens, including employment verification and re-entry into the United States after traveling abroad.

When Should Iranian Citizens Renew or Replace their Green Card?
There are several scenarios in which Iranian citizens may need to renew or replace their green cards:
  • Green Card Expiration: Green cards issued to Iranian citizens generally have a 10-year validity period. It is crucial to renew the card before it expires to maintain legal status and avoid potential issues.
  • Conditional Green Card Expiration: Iranian citizens who obtained a green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen within two years of the wedding may receive a conditional green card, valid for two years. In this case, the couple must apply to remove the conditions and obtain a regular green card before the conditional green card expires.
  • Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Green Card: If an Iranian citizen's green card is lost, stolen, or damaged, it is essential to apply for a replacement as soon as possible to maintain proper documentation.
  • Information Change: If there is a significant change in personal information, such as a name change due to marriage or divorce, Iranian citizens must apply for a replacement green card with updated information.
  • Green Card Errors: If the green card contains errors, such as a misspelled name or incorrect date of birth, Iranian citizens must apply for a replacement to ensure accurate information is on record.

The Green Card Renewal or Replacement Process for Iranian Citizens
The green card renewal process for Iranian citizens involves the following steps:
  • Step 1 - Determine Eligibility for Renewal: Before beginning the renewal process, Iranian citizens must ensure they are eligible for renewal. They can do this by checking the expiration date on their green card. Generally, the renewal process should begin six months before the expiration date.
  • Step 2 - Complete Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card: Form I-90 is the primary document used for green card renewal and replacement. Iranian citizens must accurately and thoroughly complete this form, ensuring all required information is provided. The form can be completed and submitted online through the USCIS website or via mail. Online submission is recommended, as it allows applicants to receive updates and notifications regarding their case status.
  • Step 3 - Pay the Filing Fee: The green card renewal process requires a filing fee, which can be paid online through the USCIS website or via mail with a check or money order. As of September 2021, the fee for Form I-90 is $455, with an additional $85 fee for biometric services, totaling $540. Verifying the current fee structure on the USCIS website is essential, as fees are subject to change.
  • Step 4 - Submit Supporting Documents: Iranian citizens must submit supporting documents along with their Form I-90 application. These documents may include a copy of the expired or expiring green card, government-issued identification, and, if applicable, evidence of a name change, such as a marriage certificate or court order. It is crucial to provide clear and legible copies of these documents.
  • Step 5 - Attend the Biometrics Appointment: After submitting the Form I-90 application, Iranian citizens may receive a notice from USCIS to attend a biometrics appointment. This appointment is essential for capturing the applicant's fingerprints, photograph, and signature, which will be used for background checks and creating a new green card. It is critical to attend this appointment and to bring the notice, a valid government-issued identification, and any other requested documents.
  • Step 6 - Receive the New Green Card: After successfully completing the green card renewal process, Iranian citizens will receive their new green card by mail. The new green card will be valid for ten years (or two years for a conditional green card) from the date of issuance.

Tips for a Successful Green Card Renewal or Replacement Process for Iranian Citizens
  • Start the process early: Begin the renewal or replacement process as soon as possible to avoid potential issues with an expired or incorrect green card.
  • Double-check the information: Ensure all information provided on Form I-90 and supporting documents is accurate and complete to avoid delays or denials.
  • Keep copies of submitted documents: Retain copies of all documents submitted during the renewal or replacement process for future reference.
  • Monitor the case status: Regularly check the case status online through the USCIS website to stay informed about any updates or requests for additional information.
  • Seek legal assistance if needed: If facing challenges during the renewal or replacement process, consider consulting an immigration attorney experienced in assisting Iranian clients.

Conclusion
Green card renewal and replacement are essential aspects of maintaining legal status for Iranian citizens residing in the United States as permanent residents. By understanding the renewal and replacement processes, following the steps outlined in this guide, and ensuring the timely submission of accurate and complete information, Iranian citizens can successfully navigate these processes and continue to enjoy the rights and privileges associated with their permanent resident status in the United States.

Thanks for pointing out that the process has to be started early on so that you can prevent being in a situation due to certain issues you can avoid. It seems that green card replacement processes can be quite tedious if you are not prepared, so it must be helpful to have a professional or expert in that field to guide you. And there would probably be different processes well depending on the country you cam from. Those are the things that you need to consider and understand to successfully finish the processes without delays.
